Haylee’s Hints (October 28, 2026)

Dear Haylee:

Haylee here’s my problem. My name is Ty and I’m a Nursing major at an HBCU and I’m going to be honest with you, I hate it. I’m squeamish and hate the sight of blood. I don’t like the way hospitals smell and I despise needles. I know you’re probably asking at this point, “Why did you major in a field that you loath, well the one simple answer to that question is, my mother. When I was a Freshman and searching for a major, she forced Nursing upon me with the rationale of it makes a lot of money and will make me rich. Initially I wanted to be a Mass Communications major because I love to write, speak, and do videos. My mom told me that Mass Communications was a pointless major that made no money and the majority of people who majored in it could never find jobs within the field. As an 18-year-old hearing this and making a decision that could possibly affect my future life I followed my mom’s stern advice and majored in Nursing, and I’ve regretted it ever since. My grades are low and I have absolutely no interest in this. I really want to be a Mass Communications major, but my mom is the only bread winner in our home and what she says goes. Haylee how can I tell my mom, in a respectful way, that I hate Nursing and want to follow my heart and major in something that I feel like I’m destined to do? Any advice that you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Scared Of My Momma

Dear Scared Of My Momma:

Honesty is the best policy. Choosing a major can be a tough decision, especially when factoring in the financial benefits. This is why it is important to be honest about your passion. You will always perform best when it is something you are more than passionate about, such as Mass Communications. Your passion for this major shows through the art that you create through videos, writing and speaking. There will be economic problems throughout every field of expertise at some point. Therefore, the point of the Communications field making “no money” is debatable. The only way to maximize your potential in a specific field is to gain and execute all the knowledge you consume. Your squeamish behavior and phobia of needles and blood exemplify why you won’t maximize your potential in the Nursing major. You perform best in areas that fit Mass Communications better than Nursing. Be honest with yourself and your parents about this. Respectfully identify each characteristic that exemplifies why Mass Communications fits you and Nursing doesn’t. Sometimes it takes a clear outline for someone to understand a point. Remember that this career is what you will be doing for the rest of your life, not your parents. Good luck.
