On a daily average, most of us consume nearly four to five cups of water per day. Well, if we drink that much water per day, why are we still feeling sapped? We should consume around 11 to 15 cups of water daily and by drinking 4 to 5 we fall on the marginal side. It’s easy to assume that we are getting an ample amount of hydration through sports drinks, juices, and sodas, but when you really look at the ingredients of the beverages you’re consuming, it’s easy to see how little they do in helping with intake. If this may be the case, how can anyone properly hydrate? Here are five ways to:
SIP GRADUAL AMOUNTS THROUGHOUT THE DAY: Retaining liquid is a crucial part in securing a hydrated body. Our stomachs are like sponges, so absorbing water is an easy task. However, to avoid bloating and frequent trips to the restroom, it would be best to space out the intervals. Though if you feel that you are not getting enough, listen to your body and increase your intake.
INCORPORATE ELECTROLYTES INTO YOUR HYDRATION: Water alone is not going to magically cure your dehydration. Sodium, potassium and magnesium are minerals necessary to help utilize fluids so that it can replenish and support body cells, so consider adding a pinch of sea salt or trying out coconut water.
CONSUME FOODS RICH IN WATER: The 80/20 rule says eighty percent of our daily total should come from drinking water, but to get the other twenty percent you must incorporate water-rich foods. Whenever you go to the cafe or order a bite to eat, make sure you have some fruit or vegetables on standby, just in case. It can also help with constipation.
DRINK A GLASS OF WATER THE MOMENT YOU WAKE UP: While you are asleep, your body flushes out yesterday’s toxins, which in the process depletes around 1 liter of water each night. By drinking water fresh in the morning, you lower your cortisol levels, give your brain a jumpstart, and feel rejuvenated enough to go throughout your day. Though, if you must drink coffee and juice, please wait close to an hour to do so.
SET A FREQUENT REMINDER: There are many apps you can use to give your brain a nudge, such as Calendar, Reminder and even the Clock. Set up a notification every hour or so that grabs your attention and refreshes your mind to take a water break.
Do not wait until you are thirsty to replenish. Do it throughout the entire day, regardless of where you are. Make hydration a daily routine just as much as checking your phone.
