Alcorn State Welcomes Students for High School Day

Alcorn State University (ASU) welcomed high school students from Mississippi and surrounding areas to campus for its annual High School Day on Saturday, September 26th at 10:00 am.

Students traveled to ASU to get a chance to experience the university and learn more about what it has to offer. High School Day gives students an opportunity to visit the campus while also getting a feel for college life at an Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

Several schools were represented at the event, including Simmons High School in Hollandale, Mississippi, Greenville High School in Greenville, Mississippi, Picayune Memorial High School in Picayune, Mississippi, Holmes County Central High School in Lexington, Mississippi, Gentry High School in Indianola, Mississippi, General Trass High School in Lake Providence, Louisiana, McComb High School in McComb, Mississippi, Jefferson County High School in Fayette, Mississippi and Warren Central High School in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

For current Alcorn students, High School Day is a chance to welcome younger students and show them what being a Brave is all about. Trenton McDaniels, a Sophomore Business major at Alcorn State, said High School Day allows students to experience the university before making their college decision.

“High School Day is a great way for students to see what Alcorn is really like. They get to experience the campus, meet current students and see the pride we have in being a part of the Brave Nation.”

For visiting students, the event gave them an opportunity to see Alcorn for themselves and get a better idea of what college life could look like. Katlynn Galmore, a student at Greenville High School, said the experience made Alcorn stand out.

“I really enjoyed being at Alcorn today. Everyone made us feel welcome and being on campus helped me see what college life could be like. I would definitely consider coming to Alcorn.”

For some students the event was their first time visiting Alcorn State, and the red carpet was rolled out for them. ASU presented the visitors with strolling from fraternities and sororities, music from the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Marching band, cheers from the ASU Cheerleaders and encouraging words from faculty and staff. After the event, the visiting students were given a tour of the campus, a meal in the cafeteria, then treated to the Braves’ football game as Alcorn took on Texas Southern University in Spinks-Casem stadium.
